This week we touch on unit two; the foundations of communications.
The human perception process consist of three distinct parts, namely selecting, organising and interpreting.
Selection:
The qualities of selection include frequency, contrast, intensity and novel stimuli.
The influences of selection include individual characteristics, mass media, social network, psychological state and environment.
Selection and perceptual errors include omission, distortion and oversimplification.
Applications
In response to the communication concepts that we had already learnt so far, there is this very intesting video below that is sure to reinforce what we had aleady learnt. Enjoy!
Hey guys please click on the U tube video clip below:
Woww... did you get a shock?
Applying the concepts we had learnt so far, one of the influences of selection includes our psychological state (which includes our priorities and motives). Which in this case is looking out for how many passes the team in white make. Our brain tunes itself to make this selection which may result in perceptual errors, which in this case is Omission. We miss out the bear totally!! In other words we only see what we want to see!!
Hope you enjoyed reading my blog so far.
haha... do post yr comments, share with me your experience with this clip and let me hear from you k ...

wow.. that was cool! I didn't realize a big foolish bear dancing in the middle of the team. But i guess it's not only our motives that takes effect. the test 'cheated' in the sense that they dressed the bear in black color. In "selection" of our perception, we select information based on "frequency", "contrast", "intensity", and "Novel stimuli". In my opinion, the test do not fulfill the 4 factors. the bear only cross once - there was no frequency in the test , he was camouflaged with the black team - there is no contrast and intensity in the test, and there is obviously no novel stimuli in the test. that's my opinions. cheers !
Hi dude, thanks for your comments. Regarding the part on frequency, contrast, intensity and novel stimuli in our selection process, those are the factors that marketing people use to create a deeper impression and also a more lasting impression on their consumers. This test is more on our awareness, it doesn't have to fulfill the above factors. As long as we see it a second time and notice the bear very clearly, that achieves the agender the test is created to prove; that we only see what we wanted to see and look out for ,in the midst neglecting the background things that are not so obvious. =)
Interesting video... it does communicate the message and purpose of the advertisement very well.
haha this is the 3rd time i'm seeing this video.. so i tired counting the number of passes while keeping an eye out for the bear.. i could see the bear when i'm aware of it..
i think the statement at the front saying that this is an awareness test and then asked us how many times the white team passes places us in a state of focus on the white team passing the ball.. while the bear sneaked pass our visual sensors .. its a kool way of tricking pple.. XD
It's an interesting test. I didn't realise there was a black teddy bear in the middle of the team until I watched the video twice. I just kept my eyes on the white players for the whole game. The bear is black so with all that fancy ball passing, there was no reason to take notice of anything but the white players since I was to count their passes
cool!i liked it..but i saw the bear..haha.
coz i read on as the video was loading.. but in seeing the bear i missed the passes!
haha
Lucky we have selective attention. If not, we will be overload with even more information we are taking in now
Nice Video! It catches a person unnoticed. It purely shows that we only focus on what our mind is wants to do.
haha very interesting indeed!
Ming Hong, I agree with you that its actually a good thing that we have selective attention. Or else our brain will be over loaded especially in this era of information overload. Its perhaps our brains natural mechanism and response to protect itself.
